Akua Naru

Akua Naru is an old soul whose stages of life are immediately apparent in her music. As a girl from humble beginnings with a talent for lyrics, she has been characterised by emotional turbulence and her keen eye for political disparities. Growing up in New Haven, a racially divided city battling gentrification, rising unemployment and violent crime, left a lasting imprint on her developing consciousness. With African rhythms and sounds, and influences of jazz and blues, her music and performances are a testament to the legacy of soul music and the powerful trailblazing female artist tradition on which it builds. “This lady is the keeper of the cool flow.”

Äl Jawala

Since their founding in the year 2000, the French/German band Al Jawala has gone down some quite astonishing paths with their kind of "do-it-yourself" attitude. They were amongst the first to shake up wild oriental brass with clubby beats and Hip Hop, and all this with no electronics at all as they have been busking around Europe as street musicians, igniting the fire of a whole gypsy brass band on countless drums and two saxophones! The virtuoso saxophone horn section, paired with dance beats and rich electronic basses, bring all dance floors to a boil. At times urban and club-oriented, sometimes mysterious, dark and with a thick dose rock'n'roll attitude. Unconditionally loud and self-indulgent, without losing musical depth and multi-faceted.

Antwerp Gipsy Ska Orkestra

A steamy brew of Eastern European gypsy and Jamaican ska, seasoned with a rebellious spirit. That has been Antwerp Gypsy-Ska Orkestra’s trademark for the last decade. The trailblazing band now tops it off with Kilo Gipsyska, their third album. Guitarist Mukti Gabriels explains: “In Romanes, the Roma Gypsies language, the unit kilo also applies to liquids, as in ‘a kilo of cola’ or ‘a kilo of gin-tonic’. So, Kilo Gipsyska means: our own recipe, our own cocktail, and lots of it.” Frontman Gregor Engelen: “On this album, more than ever, we play real Gypsy ska. We’re exploring our own genre, with more attention to details. That makes our music more varied and more accessible. It’s a nice position, getting older and wiser, while our audience is getting younger and wilder.”

Attack of the mad Axeman

Animalgrind Is Future! After the mad axeman destroyed the forest some animals decided to get back in charge of their destiny. There was only one way to show their extreme anger about what had happened: playing harsh and ruthless grindcore. So they left their homes to destroy your ears but also to make you sensitive to animal problems. Animal grind is an attempt at deconstructing boundaries: not only between humans and animals, but within the animals themselves: snail on drums, a bee on bass, a growling turtle on vocals and a squirrel and a night owl sharing the dirty work on guitars. Animals with very different backgrounds you may think, but they found a way of working together. And they want you to join the squad - no matter if you have two, four, six, eight or a thousand legs. Punishing blastbeats, hard hitting guitars, exploding bass and bone rattling vocals: these are the weapons fighting ignorance, injustice and.. the mad axeman. Love Animal! Hate Fascism!

Danielle de Picciotto & Alexander Hacke

Their work is unconventional and versatile. The German-American artist couple Danielle de Picciotto and Alexander Hacke create, since 2001, interdisciplinary projects on stage, in theaters, museums and the Underground as a duo. Danielle de Picciotto and Alexander Hacke have been leading a nomadic life since 2010. The reason for their restlessness is the overall gentrification, the annihilation of individualism, the rising costs of living and the relentless sellout by the mainstream entertainment industry. "Artists need to find new ways of working now-a-days in order to upkeep integrity and autonomy. The old patterns no longer function.” Their search for external & internal clarity, researching archaic principles and philosophies has helped them master the rigors of the road. For the attentive listener "Perseverantia" reveals a treasure of their truisms. The music is mostly instrumental, with a few spoken-word lyrics by Danielle de Picciotto. Together with the throat-singing by Alexander Hacke, the purring and squeaking of the hurdy-gurdy and an ether-plucking harp, melancholic violin melodies and the hum and growl of bass and guitar, one is placed in an acoustic world of mysteries, which floats out of the loudspeakers like an epic movie, both disturbing and mesmerizing.

Instrumentals oscillate, reminiscent of the 80’s: Dark Wave, Krautrock and Neogoth. They have programmed each track to pull like a dark harbinger of disaster on the dance floor, as do the soul-seeking spirits in the storm, whose myth, ”Die Wilde Jagd”, they hold in their name. With a diverse range of percussion instruments, they create their own "hunting music” - at times unsettling, like swampland or a dark forest, but also urgent and pressing, like incandescent lasers or a hypnotic dance. Whispering, reciting voices conjure up the spirits of the woods, while synthetic sounds, melodies and noises flit about before they are re-captured, structured and grounded by crystalline beats and pulsating bass lines.

For the monster that the band created with their demo, many veterans of the genre would sell their soul. He who lives by krachigen, crusty Swedish-Death with Darkthrone-impact, will find himself in here.

The Austrian Duo HVOB ("Her Voice Over Boys") established itself in the electronic music scene with their debut album of 2013, and through their intelligent, melodic, driving sound. But their second work, "Trialogue" of last year, is even more as the name suggests. It an art project comprising a discourse between the disciplines of sound, video and installation, realised by HVOB, the VJs licherloh, and the visual artist Clemens Wolf. The joint work was created over the plurality of counteracting moments, inspirations and associations, making the album a synthesis of the arts. The theme centres on ten physical processes, the course of which is documented and interpreted interactively on three artistic levels via Clemens Wolf's orchestrated processes, the lyrics and sounds of HVOB's tracks, and the visuals by VJs lichterloh. Album Tearing, mixing, bursting, melting, oxidising, breaking, imploding, etching, bending, burning, track to video, video to artwork, artwork to track: ‘Trialog’ depicts the transformation of ten physical processes in ten tracks, while HVOB’s sound distinctively shapes the album. HVOB essentially perform live on stage, together with a drummer. A galvanising challenge for the dancing brain!

Their music is by no means subject to patterns, but is a flowing, unrestricted nature that never long submits to a clearly definable genre. Kouyaté is a name which many famous Griots carry. Just like Moh! Kouyaté, who comes from a griot dynasty from which there is really no escape. Griots are the West African storytellers who carry the knowledge and wisdom of poems and singing over to the next generations. The 38-year-old decided against the balafon, the traditional instrument of the griots, and opted instead for the guitar. In 2007 he was drawn from Guinea into France thus becoming a highlight of the Afro-Parisian scene, owing to the combination of his energetic stage presence, soulful voice and guitar elegance, but also due to his style. The group also features the rich baritone of Mexican vocalist Salvador Duran, framed by guitar, keyboard, percussion, drums and, of course, brass. Though Sergio Mendoza bills the project as 'indie mambo', he pours so much more into the pot, from psychedelic cumbia to splashes of merengue and ranchera — stretching each staple genre (along with a surprising cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk") like taffy. As a result, the music isn't a museum-quality reproduction of eras past, but instead a living, breathing thing.

It´s not only the hint of french in the english vocalised lyrics but their power of performance what makes them unique. They offer "Broken hymns for beating hearts" to universal punk rock songs. And we can´t stop wanting to hear it louder and sing and shout along.

The Diamond Road Show

The Diamond Road Show sits between concert and cinema. It is a travel through dream structures, events and un-foldings that inventively blend roadmovie-aesthetics with experimental trickfilm techniques. The visuals are created by Low Brow Artist Pencil Quincy and his Magic Machine. Quincy combines early cinematic and animation technology with his inimitable, vaudeville style. The soundscape is created by Digger Barnes: one-man-band, story teller and outlaw. Each song is a cinematic and atmospheric journey itself, drawing on influences from Americana, film-soundtrack and folk music from all over the place. Songs that play on the car radio late at night as you steer down the peaceful groove of a moonlight highway. The Diamond Road Show has been constructed as an ongoing and changing cinematic music-project since 2009. A story that is always unfolding...

The Excitements

Whether live on stage or on vinyl, The Excitements are one of the bands that authentically embody the rebirth of soul and R'n'B. Explosive vocals, sharp horns and a magnificent drum beat make for a whole lot of energy, ready to engage the audience in a hot dance performance.

These four artists from Berlin are breaking the cabaret down into its origin and mixing it up with mundane punk, fizzy melancholy and a big drop of bold cravenness. The Undercover Hippy

Billy Rowan, aka The Undercover Hippy, is definitely not your average singer songwriter. His music brings together acoustic guitar, soulful vocals, infectious reggae rhythms, and the lyrical delivery of a skilled MC. After 7 years spent DJ’ing and MC’ing on the Drum & Bass circuit, Billy swapped the decks for a guitar and started out as a solo act in 2007. Although he still occasionally does solo gigs, these days he usually plays with a full band, mixing guitars, keys, drums, bass, percussion and backing vocals to create a high energy, interactive and highly entertaining live show. Combining intelligent, provocative lyrics with dangerously catchy hooks and a feel good groove, this is music for the thinking man to shake his arse to.

The Valerie Solanas

An indie band with a special flavor: sometimes moving, sometimes uplifting, sometimes dark and elusive. Their sound combines elements of jazz, blues and groove with avant-garde and spoken word. For their latest album the band was inspired by vampires, Lovecraftian monsters and other fabulous creatures from symbolist literature. To these should be added romance and metropolitan melancholy. The dazzling live drawings by artist Bert Lezy give their shows a special art performance touch. Welcome to the magical world of The Valerie Solanas!

Verworner-Krause-Kammerorchester

Verworner Frills Chamber Orchestra, VKKO for short. A seemingly classical orchestra of brass, strings, and percussion, playing acoustic house beats over party techno, through to avant-garde pop and contemporary music. A hard hitting kick drum amidst fluent violins, rough Chicago House bass lines underneath bold romanticisms of brass and woodwinds. Melancholic vocals sing compelling stories in a stream of consciousness, above soothing synthesiser chords and techno rhythms, to send you into a roller coaster of emotions.

Vil

In the absence of just another next big personal plan, there's plenty of room – for nothingness, or for creativity and the unforeseen. Maria Bay Bechmann and Julius Rothlaender, hailing from different places and musical backgrounds, used just that as their starting point for yet another approach to music and the silence in between. After combining for an entry in a side project called 'Mount Theodore', the two decided to meet up for the first time in Julius Rothlaender's studio in Reykjavík for fourteen days of music experiments in October 2015. The open end of this rather short time span saw four completely new songs, mellow and moony, that were presented to people in an intimate headphone concert on the last evening, marking the birth of 'Vil'.

Von Wegen Lisbeth

Take five guys from Berlin, puree and stir them in a small basement together. At 180 degrees the result is a fairly thick pastry. It has a slight Indie smell, tastes a bit of Casio Keyboard, and with an aftertaste of scratching guitars and a stomping beat it makes for an uneasy stomach - and somewhere between glockenspiel and steel drum there is still room for lyrics. Lyrics about Lina. Lyrics about love. Lyrics about your sister. Lyrics about you! Von Wegen Lisbeth are always on the move and make the concert your local gymnastics club competition.

Walls & Birds

Wall & Birds are a group of three or four artists, living through this main project of theirs in Berlin. They released the album Daytona Beach in late 2015, and it is beautiful. This here is intended as actual information, since beauty and progress in music aren't always well allied, and some may not feel yet ready for another grand shot of love. Don't panic! This is as strange as it gets, when Walls & Birds's society of song inhabitants that have been written of in the article "Goodbye Solitude" comes to life, trance, or sometimes comes to dance in these songs. Coherence is sometimes scarce, and the bewilderment about their music excites the critics just as much as the crowd.

Wintergatan

Wintergatan seems to have packed a lot of anticipation for the spring and stardust from the Milky Way into their music. The playful sounds of multi-instrumentalists are certainly proof of that. Not only synths or drums therein, but often chime or repurposed slide projectors. After a closer look, it is found that a spacecraft from everyday objects rattles with quirky beats just around the corner, while the five cosmonauts start their musical engines.
